Summer’s Hidden Threat: What’s Really Putting Your Animals at Risk

In our last note, we talked about keeping pets cool, hydrated, and safe from heatstroke — all still true and still important. But there’s a second, quieter risk that peaks at exactly the same time of year: parasites and warm-weather infections. Heat and humidity don’t just make animals uncomfortable — they’re the ideal incubator for the organisms that cause coccidiosis, intestinal worms, giardia, fleas, and pasture-borne infections. This guide walks through what’s actually more active right now, species by species, and what’s a sensible, verified way to respond.
Why summer changes the equation: Most of the parasites covered below spend part of their life cycle outside the animal’s body — as eggs or oocysts in soil, bedding, or pasture. Warmth and moisture speed that outside stage up dramatically. Coccidia oocysts, for example, can go from freshly shed to infectious in as little as 6 hours in warm, moist conditions, versus days in cooler, drier weather. Hookworm larvae develop and survive best in warm, aerated soil. Fleas, mosquitoes, and pasture-borne worm larvae all reproduce faster as temperatures rise. Add in more time outdoors, more shared water sources, and more animal-to-animal contact, and summer becomes the single highest-risk window of the year for these problems.
🐶🐱 Dogs & Cats
Coccidiosis — faster, and hitting the youngest animals hardest
Coccidia (Isospora species in dogs and cats) spread through ingestion of infective oocysts in stool-contaminated soil, bedding, or grooming. In warm, moist summer conditions those oocysts can become infectious within hours instead of days, and puppies and kittens between 4–12 weeks — especially around weaning — are the most vulnerable. Signs include watery or bloody diarrhea, poor appetite, and dehydration; many infections are mild, but young or stressed animals can decline quickly.

Giardia — a shared-water and shared-space problem
Giardia cysts spread through fecal-contaminated water, food, and surfaces. Summer brings more trips to dog parks, lakes, communal water bowls, and boarding facilities — all classic exposure points. Signs range from no symptoms at all to chronic, greasy, foul-smelling diarrhea and weight loss.

Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms & tapeworms
Hookworm larvae specifically thrive in warm, shaded, moist soil, where they can survive for months and infect animals either by being swallowed or by penetrating the skin directly. Roundworm eggs also survive and spread more readily in warm, humid ground. More barefoot-paw time on grass and soil during summer means more exposure for both.

Fleas, ticks & heartworm — the classic summer trio
Flea and tick populations expand fastest in warm weather, and mosquito activity (the vector for heartworm) peaks alongside them. A flea infestation can escalate from a couple of hitchhikers to a full household problem within days once temperatures climb.

🦜 Pet Birds
Birds kept in outdoor aviaries, screened porches, or with more open-window time in summer face more exposure to droppings from wild birds and opossums, standing water, and insects — all common routes for avian parasites. Giardia and Trichomonas are frequently seen (especially in cockatiels and budgerigars), alongside roundworms and, less commonly, Sarcocystis carried in via insects or rodents that have had contact with opossum feces.
Watch for weight loss, fluffed or lethargic behavior, and unusually wet or voluminous droppings. Avian medicine has a much narrower safety margin than dog and cat medicine, so any treatment in birds should be dosed and directed by a vet experienced with avian species.

🐔 Backyard Poultry: Chickens & Turkeys
Coccidiosis (caused by Eimeria species) is the single biggest summer threat to a flock. Oocysts sporulate — become infectious — within 1–2 days in the 70–90°F, moist litter conditions that are common all summer, and damp bedding around waterers makes it worse. The disease damages the intestinal lining directly, and even birds that survive typically show decreased growth rate, weight loss, and reduced egg production; full recovery of prior growth and laying performance is not guaranteed.
Heat stress compounds the problem. Once temperatures pass roughly 85°F, egg production can drop 15–40%, shell quality declines as birds pant (which lowers blood calcium availability), and any interruption in water access for even a day or two can suppress laying for weeks afterward. A flock fighting both heat stress and coccidiosis at once is under real, compounding pressure — good ventilation, constant clean water, and prompt treatment all matter.

Eggs and meat from treated poultry: If you keep birds for eggs or meat, always follow the specific product’s labeled withdrawal period before eggs are eaten or birds are processed. Withdrawal times exist because they’re the window it takes a drug to clear from the animal’s system to a safe residue level — they vary by product and formulation, so check the label or ask us rather than assuming.
🐴 Horses
Pasture parasites
Strongyles and other intestinal parasites build up on pasture through the warm months, as eggs shed in manure hatch and develop into infective larvae faster in summer heat and humidity, then get picked up again during grazing. Left unmanaged, high parasite burdens contribute to poor condition, dull coat, colic risk, and in young or debilitated horses, diarrhea and weight loss.

EPM & equine coccidia
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM), caused by Sarcocystis neurona, isn’t strictly a “summer disease” the way flea season or pasture worms are — infective sporocysts are shed by opossums year-round. But summer’s heavier barn traffic, more turnout, shows, and travel all add more opportunities for feed and water to be contaminated. Signs include incoordination, weakness, or asymmetric gait, and any horse showing neurologic signs needs a prompt veterinary work-up rather than home treatment.

DMSO for heat-related swelling and inflammation
Summer’s heavier work, travel, and footing changes bring more tendon, joint, and soft-tissue strain. DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is a topical agent long used in horses to help reduce localized swelling and inflammation, and it also carries other applied substances through the skin more readily — which is exactly why it should only be combined with other products under veterinary guidance, and never applied to broken skin, open wounds, or by anyone but the animal it’s intended for.

🐄🐐🐑 Cattle, Goats & Sheep
For animals raised for meat or milk, summer parasites aren’t just a comfort issue — they’re a production and welfare issue with measurable numbers behind them.
Haemonchus contortus (barber pole worm) — the biggest summer threat in goats and sheep
This blood-feeding stomach worm has an unusually short life cycle (about 20 days) and extremely high egg output — a single female can lay 5,000–15,000 eggs a day, versus a few hundred for most other worms — which lets populations explode on pasture in warm, humid weather. A goat or sheep carrying a heavy burden can lose meaningful blood volume daily. Effects range from sudden collapse and pale gums in acute cases, to “bottle jaw” (fluid swelling under the jaw) in sub-acute cases, to progressive weight loss, poor condition, and reduced milk production in chronic cases. Lambs and kids nursing from anemic, underconditioned dams are affected too.
Gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle
Cattle on summer pasture carry a similar burden from species like Ostertagia. The production impact has been measured directly: deworming has been shown to increase daily milk yield by roughly 0.35–2.1 kg per cow, with herds carrying a heavy worm burden estimated to lose 800+ liters of milk per cow per year, plus reduced milk fat content. In young, growing cattle, the same infections slow weight gain — and that early growth deficit can carry forward into lower first-lactation milk yield and a longer time to first breeding later on.
Coccidiosis in calves, lambs & kids
Just as in poultry and companion animals, coccidia oocysts sporulate faster in warm, moist conditions, and young, recently weaned, or crowded animals are most at risk. Outbreaks can move quickly from mild scours to severe, even fatal, diarrhea in a group of kids or lambs.

Meat and milk withdrawal periods matter — every time. Any dewormer or antiprotozoal given to a food-producing animal carries a withdrawal period: the minimum time that must pass before milk can be sold/consumed or the animal can be sent for slaughter, so drug residues have time to clear. Withdrawal times differ by drug class (benzimidazoles are typically measured in days; macrocyclic lactones can require weeks), by species, and by formulation — so the number is never “the same as last time” by default. Always check the specific product label and confirm with your veterinarian before selling milk or meat from a treated animal.

Everything above is a starting point for a conversation with your veterinarian, not a replacement for one. A few things worth keeping in mind across every species covered here:
- Diarrhea, weight loss, and poor condition can come from parasites, bacterial infections, or other causes that look similar — a fecal exam or vet diagnosis before treatment avoids guessing. - Follow labeled dosing for the species and weight of the animal — extra-label use should be a veterinary decision, not a guess.
